Sail Events Reports and Results 2016
The Club have many events running during the year. A look at the events list will show these are many and varied. Some of them are races and we have an Official Race Officer and reports and results are available on this page.
S- Class Yacht Race - 9th October 2016
Race Report by John Goodyear
The final S-Class race of the season was held in calm conditions on Sunday, October 9th with five yachts competing for honours.
All competitors crossed the start line very close together and the race was “on.” Over the first lap Stuart Smith, Dave Baker and Dave Tuckwood challenged for the lead with Dave T. just about holding the lead as the yachts tacked back up the lake following the start run down and navigation of the tricky winds down in the left-hand corner of the lake.
By the start of the second lap Stuart had opened up a slight lead over Dave B. and began to pull away as the race progressed. In the end he finished up winning by a very comfortable margin with Dave B. in second place followed
home by Dave T. a somewhat distant third. Harry Sharpe battled through to finish fourth with Roger Garrett in final place due no doubt to not having a topsail to make best use of what little wind was available.
PLACING'S:_
1. Stuart Smith
2. Dave Baker
3, Dave Tuckwood
4, Harry Sharpe
5 Roger Garrett.

George Trophy Yacht Race - 25th September 2016

Race Report by Cathy Wilson
This race is for Jif65 yachts only and the race had been postponed from the 18th September due to lack of wind.
The weather for this race was slightly overcast with moderate winds, still challenging for Wilton Park where the winds are notoriously flukey.
There were 11 entries for the race and the start was good with no Yachts over the line.
Andy Nall was first round the bottom mark with Mick Hebden, Jack Stanley and Roy Clarkson close behind.
Roy managed to work his way into the lead on the first Lap and was to stay there till the end of the race.
Overall results were:
138 Roy Clarkson
192 Harry Sharpe
510 Mick Hebden
137 Stuart Smith
140 Kevin Hepworth
712 Brian Byrne
132 Jack Stanley
148 Bill Crowther
711 DNF Andy Nall
Presidents Cup Yacht Race - 17th July 2016

Report by Cathy Wilson (Race Officer) .
The Weather for the race was sunny with some high cloud, winds were good for racing but as usual at Wilton Park variable in both strength and direction over the course.
17 boats entered including several Jif 65’s, Jif 79, Northwind’s, One Design, Chameleon, Shuremont and DF 65's.
The race started with no boats over the line and the fleet all fairly close to one another. At the first mark Dave Tuckwood was in the lead with Fred Noble, Nick Roberts, Dave Baker and Roger Parry close behind. At the end of the first lap Dave Baker was in the lead and held that position for the rest of the race. Stuart Smith and John Goodyear fought over second and third throughout the race with Stuart in the lead at the end. The decent wind meant the race was one of the quickest this year so lets hope for some good winds for the next race on the 18th September (George Trophy - Jif65).

Northwind Sail Race - 8th May

This club event, available to members only and now open to all yachts at or under 31” in length, was held at Wilton park on Sunday, May 8th
With no club officials available to organise things due to other committments the decision was taken to host the event under normal Wednesday afternoon racing protocols, a decision that witnessed things working smoothly and effectively following a vote to race the full three laps despite the light winds and the appointment of volunteer officials.
Thanks are due to Stuart Smith for collecting the entry fees, often despite loud cries of protest, Bill Crowther for acting as starter and roving invigilator, and Andy Nall for scoring.
Conditions on the day consisted of bright sunshine with a light and (very) variable wind blowing down the lake from right to left. (Well, some of the time!) Thirteen competitors took part and at the start Doug Potter, Chris Thompson and John Goodyear lead the field to the first buoy with the lead then changing with some regularity until the top right-hand buoy was reached. Here, John cut it, in part due to a large power boat creating waves and had to do a full 360 dropping him down to third place some distance back from the leading two yachts. Half way through the second lap John caught up and nipped into the lead again at the left-hand buoy and caught a gust of wind that propelled him half way down the lake. Doug and Chris, despite being within a few feet of John, only partially caught the wind proving once more how fickle Wilton Park can be and how luck still plays an important part in racing. John subsequently never relinquised the lead and sailed on to eventually win by quite a margin lapping some other competitors in the process.
RESULTS:-
John Goodyear, Doug Potter, Fred Senior, Stuart Smith, Chris Thompson, Dave Tuckwood, Mick Hebden, Roy Clarkson, Harry Sharpe, Richard Leech, Jack Stanley, David Etchells, Brian Byrne.

Blue Riband Yacht Race – 10th April 2016

Report by Cathy Wilson (Race Officer) .
The Weather for the race was clear and sunny, winds were light and variable
.
13 Boats entered including several Jif 65’s, two Jif 79’s, two Northwind’s, a one Design and a DF 65.
The race started with John Goodyear first over the start line. No one was over the line so the race Officers job was simply to keep track of the fleet. The variable wind and mixture of boats meant the fleet was fairly spread out. John held his lead to the first mark followed closely by Chris Thompson, Doug Potter, Mick Hebden and Stuart Smith. At the end of the first lap John had built a good lead which he was never going to lose. He was followed by Stuart and Doug. Lap two saw John maintain his lead with Dave Baker in second and Stuart and Doug close behind. The DF65 of Brian Byrne was at a distinct disadvantage with the light winds but to his credit he persevered and completed all three laps. Unfortunately Roy Clarkson had boat problems and was a DNF.
Results are as follows:-
1 John Goodyear 135 Northwind
2 Dave baker 506 One Design
3 Stuart Smith 137 Jif 65
4 Chris Thompson 507 Northwind
5 Doug Potter 36 Jif 79
6 Mick Hebden 510 Jif 79
7 Jack Stanley 132 Jif 65
8 Dave Etchells 149 Jif 65
9 Roger Parry 713 Jif 65
10 Harry Sharpe 192 Jif 65
11 Andrew O’Connor 518 Jif 65
12 Brian Byrne 712 DF65
DNF Roy Clarkson 138 Jif 65

March Hare Sail Race - 20th March 2016

Report by Cathy Wilson – Race Officer of the Day
The Weather Report for Sunday was cloudy with light winds. On the day we were fortunate to start with clear sunny skies, but the winds were very light, visibility was excellent.
15 Skippers entered the race with a very mixed fleet from Jif65, DF65, Jif79, Northwind, Nimbus, Victoria and a One Design Boat.
There was just enough wind to run the usual three Lap Event and all 15 Skippers duly stayed behind the line for the start. There were no problems at the start with no boats across the line. John Goodyear was first away with his Northwind but was soon caught by Chris Thompson’s Victoria and Chris led at the first mark followed closely by John and Stuart Smith with his Jif65.
The winds were very variable, quite normal for Wilton Park and the fleet quickly stretched out with Doug and Chris heading for the waterfall end mark in the lead. It looked like Doug was going to take the first lap but a plastic bag on the keel slowed him down. Chris took the first lap with Doug and John close behind.. The lead swapped several times over the next lap but John managed to keep ahead of Chris, Doug and Stuart on the next lap. The final lap saw John consolidate his lead and cross the line well ahead. Stuart Smith was a very creditable second sailing a Jif. Doug was third and Chris fourth.
A very good tempered race with only the odd clash of boats, as there are no rules after the start no penalty turns were required and skippers mostly seemed happy. Brian Byrne had battery problems but still came back to compete in the race although that put him last. The mixed fleet and flukey winds posed an interesting challenge for the Race Officer as some competitors were just starting their last laps as John finished.
Results. March Hare 2016.

2nd 137 Stuart Smith Jif65
