S-Class Yacht Race – 8th October 2017
S-Class Yacht Race – 8th October 2017
Report by Cathy Wilson and John Goodyear.
Thanks to John Goodyear for running the race when I needed to take Alan Wyatt home.
For those not aware Alan has just had a triple heart bypass, so it was nice to see him at the pond. I am sure he would have stayed longer if the weather had been warmer.
As the name says this race is for s-class boats only. It was nice to see six of these beautiful boats on the water.
The Weather was cool but dry. Unfortunately the wind gradually dropped and only three boats managed to complete the course at the end of the 15 minute end of race timeout.
Stuart Smith, Dave Tuckwood and Harry Sharpe all deserve a mention for their persistance!
Results.

George Trophy Yacht Race – 24th September 2017
George Trophy Yacht Race – 24th September 2017
Report by Cathy Wilson.
Thanks to scorers Terry Scarth and Mick Burtop again allowing me to take part.
The race was originally scheduled for 17th September but due to wind conditions and confusion over which Yachts were eligible to compete was rescheduled to the 24th. The George Trophy is for Jif65 yachts only.
Weather for the race was Dry, light cloud with light winds. There was enough wind to run the race and after the skippers briefing we decided to run the full three lap race.
Fifteen boats were entered. A clean start with no boats over the line. As usual at Wilton Park the winds were flukey and the twigs and plastic bags all had an effect on the racing.
John Goodyear was first on Lap one with Doug Potter and Stuart Smith just behind. The order did not change for these three and John maintained his lead till the end. All fifteen boats finished, well done to everybody, we must be getting better.

Northwind Yacht Race 21st May 2017
Report by Cathy Wilson
Weather was fine and the race started on time with 12 boats competing in a flukey wind which resulted in some interesting racing.
No problems at the start and after the first mark a group of four boats opened up a good lead and managed to maintain it for the rest of the race. The conditions were a great leveller with conditions favouring different rigs at different times, sometimes favouring Dragon Force and sometimes those with large rigs.
Doug Potter had a problem just before the race started which effectively put him out of contention.
Dave Tuckwood was leading at the final Mark but John Good year found better wind and lead at the line by half a boat length. All boats finished, we must be getting better.
Thanks to Terry Scarth and Mike Burtop for scoring, again giving Cathy Wilson a chance to race.

Blue Riband Yacht Race – 9th April 2017
Report by Cathy Wilson
The Weather was fine, sunny and dry. Not a lot of wind, 3-4 knots. After discussions with the Skippers we decided to shorten the race to two laps. Some felt there was not enough wind to sail but after more discussions we had a vote which was decided on the toss of a coin that we would attempt to race. Conditions were very variable but we managed to complete the course.
Thanks to Terry Scarth and Mick Burtop for scoring.
Eight boats entered, one Jif65, two Jif785’s, Two Northwind’s, two One design’s and one DF65.
With such light winds the race was challenging but all boats were clear at the start and at the end of the first lap John Goodyear was in the lead with Stuart Smith and Cathy Wilson close behind. The debris in the pond did not help but at the end of the race Stuart Smith was the winner beating boats with much larger sails!
Results.
Stuart Smith 137
Doug Potter 136
John Goodyear 135
Cathy Wilson 150
Roy Clarkson 138
Brian Byrne 712
Bill Crowther 148
Harry Sharpe 192

March Hare Sail Race - 12th March 2017
March Hare Sail Race – 12th March 2017
Report by Cathy Wilson
Thanks to Mick Burtop and Terry Scarth for scoring, it meant I could actually sail this year.
The weather forecast earlier in the week was for rain and hardly any wind. On race day we were lucky with no rain, light winds and a pleasant spring day with the sun breaking through.
The race had fifteen entrants with the usual mix of DF65, Jif65, Jif 785, Northwind, One Design and even an S-class
.
The start was delayed to recover two boats from the Island as this was the first race of the year and the Skippers briefing missed out an explanation of penalty turns, I will get it right next time. There will be no delays in future.
The start was excellent with no boats over the line so no penalty turns required! Cathy Wilson led at the first mark with Stuart Smith and John Goodyear close behind. Cathy led the first lap with Stuart second and John third.
John and Stuart fought a close battle all the way through the race, Cathy was pushed the wrong side of a buoy on the second lap and out of contention.
A good first race of the year with the usual good humoured sailing.
John Good year took first place with Stuart Smith second and Doug Potter third.
