Scale Modelling at KMBC
Scale Modelling
Scale modelling seems to take many forms, serious scale modelers will have as much of their models to exact scale as possible. Wire, stanchions, ropes and many other features will be exactly to scale. Many of the models built by club members can truly be considered to be "Museum Quality" and that is where several models have ended up.
To sail a model sometimes requires compromise from the scale ideal. Water and wind cannot be scaled down so models sometimes become semi-scale. Very small true scale propellers do not work well and this is a typical compromise area. Very often models can be seen operating well beyond true scale speed, and there will always be debate among groups as to what the model should do. The beauty of the club is that all aspects of modelling are catered for. Some members produce such magnificent models that sailing them and risking damaging them seems inconceivable. Others are happy to accept damage does occur and adapt their models and expectations accordingly.
Models you can see at Wilton Park include Warships, Tugs, Fishing Boats, Pleasure Cruisers, Submarines, Hovercraft and Classic Sailing Yachts. Power is from Electric Motors, Steam or wind power. No Internal Combustion Engines are allowed at Wilton Park and there is a limit to fast electrics because of safety considerations.
For anybody not familiar with model boats a trip to see us on Sunday Morning, Thursday afternoon or at the many events we organise and attend will result in a warm welcome and plenty of advice and guidance.
